You may have read many success stories of people creating a small fortune with opt-in lists and so you finally decide to have one of your own.  You may have purchased an opt-in list and then found that the list was not really targeted well towards your niche, which translates to a lot of opt-outs or few sales.

What is a good opt-in list? It's not the size of your list but the quality of your list. You need a targeted list of people who are interested in learning more about your product or service.

For those who are just starting out, here are three quick and easy ways to build a profitable opt-in list.

1) Get your customers to trust you and your products first.

You have to go to where your customers hang out to converse with them. Your customers tend to like those people that they are familiar with. You may have to go to a social media hangout, such as Facebook, or you may have to participate in forums. You may have to brand yourself so that you are recognizable. This can be done with video marketing and article marketing.

Give away an free ebook or video if they opt-in to your email list. You can followup with additional helpful tips and then point them towards products that your customer list may be interested in. You can tell if your email list is relating to you and your advice by tracking the number of people who are opening your emails and by the number of people who are clicking on the urls in your emails. Tracking should be provided by your autoresponder service.

Send out emails on a consistent basis. If you only email your list once in awhile, they may not remember you and unsubscribe from your list.  People are not going to buy something on your recommendation if they don’t know you.

2) Find a product or service that people want and need. You can do a keyword search to find the most popular keywords people are searching for. Before you invest your time, effort and money, make sure you have a targeted list of people that you are trying to sell to. Know the demographics of the people that will be buying from you. Will you be selling to just women or just men, a combination of both? Does your product appeal to the older or younger generation or both? To get an idea of the best selling products go to where the marketplace is. You might look at Amazon's Best Selling Products, which category does your product or service fit into? Do your research well and you would see the profits come in. Also provide your subscribers with your product's promotional material so they can create a buzz when talking to their friends.

3) Make friends with other opt-in list users that have related products and then offer to promote your products to your friend's list in exchange for his promoting his products to your list. This allows you to reach a greater number of people with the probability of selling more products. This is basically beneficial especially if it is someone who has already launched a successful opt-in list. These are people that have the experience in this venture and experience is still the best teacher. While there are many articles available for you in the internet to use, there is nothing like getting a first hand account from someone you trust. Experienced opt-in list users will be able to tell you what to do and what not to do because they have gone through it. While different situations occur for different people, the general concept can still be very helpful. There are many things to avoid and these people will be able to tell you which ones.

Building a profitable opt-in list don’t just happen overnight. It takes time to put in a series of autoresponder messages at your autoresponder service. You must get the optin code and put it into a squeeze page (a page offering something for free in exchange for the free product). There are many nice opt-in templates available on the web. If you are creating a newsletter, most autoresponder services provide you with quality newsletter templates for your use for free.

As your email list grows, you should also maintain the quality of your list. Keep it organized and manageable. Get or hire help if need be, just make sure that your subscribers are happy and satisfied and they will be willing to buy from you.
